Marketing ideas for starters

First marketing idea
Make sure you know what you are selling. Duh? Would you think that was the easiest and most obvious thing to determine? Nope, it isn’t. Here are a few ones to consider.

Are you selling comfort? What about peace of mind? No? Then surely it must be convenience. You would think that McDonalds sells quick turnaround. But it seems that the first franchise Ray Kroc who took the company to heights previously not seen in fast food,  felt he was all about real estate rather. Checked lately where those McDonalds are?

Consider fast food ads. Many times their message has nothing to do with food, or with convenience or with nutrition. Or the lack thereof. It has to do with lifestyle and image and age of its customers. A totally different marketing idea than you thought, I would imagine.

What does Coca Cola sell at the moment? Their message changes regularly.  Up pops ‘Can we refresh you’ when loading their main site. Guess that’s it for this decade then. To a certain extent Coca Cola is trying to fit in with the youth vibe.

Many years ago I overheard a lawyer advise his clients that he should consider him, the lawyer, like a condom. With other words he was protecting his client against future events that could go wrong. That protection could be for a house sale not to go wrong or a pre-nuptial to keep a wealthy celebrity, err wealthy!

So within your first step into your business, for starters, identify what you are selling. Oh and if you are Seth Godin, you would need to add that whatever you do, would have to be exceptional! Ah no, remarkable actually.
